Former Dragon, Lazar Stojsavljevic, made his professional debut as he started the First Round Carabao Cup game for Newport County away to Gillingham. The hard hitting centre back made forty appearance over six seasons for the club's youth teams, scoring one goal in that time. Lazar's debut came a couple of months after he signed for the League Two club on a two year deal following his departure from Millwall Football Club where he spent last season in their U23 squad. Lazar originally broke onto the football league scene in October 2017 when he came off the bench in the Vanarama National League match for Woking FC before going on to make a total of 6 appearances for the Cards, scoring one goal, before securing a one year deal with Millwall for the 2018-19 season.
'Lazar was always a talent when playing at the club. He played most of his games against boys a year older yet played and looked as though he was the most experienced player on the pitch. His menatlity and ability showed from a young age and I had no doubt in my mind that he would make it professionally one day. It is a great testament to his hard work and determination.' (Joshua Lino-da Costa, coach 2012-2016).
U21 Win League Title
Saturday 6th April 2019
Daniel da Silva led his U21 to another league title, the third in this age groups history of the club. The Dragons went into their title deciding match 3 points ahead of Broomwood, who were the only side that could catch them up. The U21 side seemed to be up against it as they struggled to get into the game which saw Broomwood take a 1-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes of the match. The Dragons were thrown a lifeline when Goncalo Carvalho was deemed to have been fouled in the area following a great corner kick. Yves Zady, who has been extremely reliable with 25 goals this season, was unable to convert, adding pressure onto the Dragons. With 10 minutes left in the first half, the Dragons showed their dominance from set pieces again when Broomwood were unable to deal with another great cross which then fell perfectly for Gean Mara to volley home his first goal of the season. The Dragons started dominating the pace of the game, however, Pedro Peixoto was brought into action to stop a great one on one save but was eventually beaten as Broomwood went 2-1 up early in the second half. Yves Zady made up for his earlier penalty miss as he used his strength and pace to beat four Broomwood defenders to hit the ball in at the inner post. The Dragons then pushed on and found themselves in complete control in the closing stages of the game. Two goals were disallowed as the linesman controversially deemed both goals to be offside. Captain Esteban Velasquez then took the ball for a quick throw in with one minute to go to catch the Broomwood defence off guard allowing the ball to fall for Felipe Alvaro who finished into the open net to ensure the league title was coming back to Landor Road, once again!
'At the beginning of the season, I said that we could be the best team in this league. We had our moments but today we showed it. Those last fifteen minutes we came together as a team and showed everyone what we could do. I am so proud of what they boys achieved this season and they thoroughly deserve this.'
U12 Crowned Champions
Saturday 6th April 2019
Antonio Coelho led the U12 to their first championship in the CIDAsport League as they flew to victory in the end of season tournament. The former first team goalkeeper led the U12 to an astounding 25-4 aggregate win with Rodrigo Silva stealing the show with 7 goals, bringing his tally up to 20 for the season. Gabriel Augusto also enjoyed his cameo in the U12, up from the U10, adding 4 goals whilst debutant Thomas Wyett also added four to the tally. Alberto Morillas enjoyed his return from injury by scoring three whilst both Andre Anderson and Goncalo Cardoso scored 2. Wadzani Gadzama, Eduardo Andrade and Tyler Jackson-Dawkins also found the score sheet as the side overcame all other teams to win all games in the tournament to become the CIDAsport League champions 2018-19. The U12 scored 64 goals in all competitions, conceding 55 along the way. The young Dragons had their downs this season but have pulled through and put together a great team performance on the last day to secure the CIDAsport title.
'The team is coming together really well. From being a team that were not able to play together, they have come a strong side. Next season they will be tested as they move to 11 a side football but if they carry on with the focus they have had in matches, they will excel in all areas.'
U16 In London Cup Heartbreak
Saturday 9th March 2019
Tiago Vasoncelos' U16 side were left bitterly disappointed as the fell victim to a very talented Independent side. Having already lost 2-0 in January for the league, both sides travelled to Long Lane FC for the county cup final as Independent started very well, flying to a 3-0 lead. Darrell Agyemang brought one back for the Dragons before Independent went on to score four more. Captain, Luca Barra's goal was not enough to bring the Dragons back into the game which brought a sad ending to an amazing cup run.
'The scoreline did not represent the performance. We played some great football but did not take our chances. It is a shame as it would have been a great achievement for the boys who have battled well this season.'
